In his message, Trump described the initiative as a “great honor” and expressed his desire to travel this highway soon, which connects important regions in southern Morocco. The highway not only stands out for its size and modernity but has also become a symbol of Morocco’s commitment to regional development and the strengthening of its sovereignty.

The Tiznit-Dajla Highway, now officially known as the “Donald Trump Highway,” is one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects ever built in Morocco. Stretching over 1,000 kilometers, it runs along the Atlantic coast from Tiznit to Dajla, strategically linking the southern part of the country. This facilitates connections between key cities such as Guelmim and El Aaiún, while also boosting trade with sub-Saharan Africa.

Promoted as part of a development model initiated by King Mohamed VI, the highway aims to integrate the south into the national economy. This infrastructure is expected to boost investment, improve logistics, and enhance road safety—conditions essential for transforming the southern provinces into a growth engine at the national level.

The naming of the highway in honor of Donald Trump reflects the strength of bilateral ties between Morocco and the United States. The relationship has strengthened significantly over the past few decades, especially following the historic U.S. decision to recognize Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, one of the central issues in regional politics.

Mohammed VI and Trump have maintained a close relationship based on a shared strategic vision, which is also evident in diplomatic and economic exchanges. President Trump’s award of the Wissam Al-Mohammadi—Morocco’s highest honor—exemplifies this mutual support and the commitment to sustaining long-term cooperation in areas ranging from security to economic development.

Beyond its political significance, the Donald J. Trump Highway has a considerable economic and social impact. Its construction has generated thousands of direct and indirect jobs, boosting the construction sector and local industry. However, this approach is rejected by the Polisario Front, which continues to assert the right to self-determination for the Sahrawi people.
