According to WHO’s daily update, the Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded 452 cases, including 82 deaths. Neighboring Uganda has reported 19 cases and two deaths. Both countries have recorded 471 Ebola infections and 84 deaths, an increase of 100 cases and 20 deaths compared to the previous day.

WHO has declared the Ebola outbreak in DR Congo and Uganda a “public health emergency of international concern”, posing the risk of cross-border transmission. WHO warns that without strong intervention measures, the outbreak could become the largest Ebola epidemic ever recorded.

Ebola virus, which spreads through close contact and bodily fluids, has claimed more than 15,000 lives in Africa over the past 50 years.

The current outbreak was officially announced on May 15 in northeastern DR Congo, though the virus is believed to have spread silently beforehand. There is no licensed vaccine or specific therapeutics against the Bundibugyo strain of the virus.
