Brussels 08.06.2024 “The European Union is appalled by credible reports of yet another senseless massacre of over 100 defenceless villagers committed by the Rapid Support Forces in Wad al-Noura, in Al-Jazira State, Sudan”, reads the statement by the EU top diplomat Josep Borrell.
“The EU is investing substantially, together with the OHCHR and the UN Independent Expert on the human rights situation in Sudan, in the monitoring and documentation of human rights violations committed by the belligerents since the beginning of the over one-year conflict to ensure that the perpetrators of these crimes are held fully accountable.
“Once again, the EU demands an immediate cessation of hostilities and unhindered access for humanitarians. The respect of international law and the protection of civilians must be upheld”.
An attack by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by general Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo known as “Hemedti” in a village in central Sudan has killed “up to 100” people, according to local human rights activists.
The Wad Madani Resistance Committees reported on social media late on Wednesday May 5 that the RSF, which has been at war with the regular army for more than a year, moved their military operations to Wad al-Noura in Gezira state, where “in two waves” they attacked, deploying heavy artillery.
The committees shared pictures of dozens of bodies already wrapped, prepared for burial in what they described as a “mass grave” in the public place. It said it was “waiting for a confirmed toll of the dead and injured”.
Women, children, and elderly were among the victims of the attacks, said Mini Arko Minawi, governor of Darfur province, confirming the massacre with a video showing the shrouded bodies on social media platform X.
Up to present the conflict has forced 8.8 million people in Sudan to leave their homes, including two million who have now left the country.
