EU-Sudan: arrest warrant for Hamdok is “source of concern”

Brussels 05.04.2024 Today the EU diplomacy announced they “took note” of the arrest warrants for the leadership of Tagadum including that of ex-Prime Minister of Sudan – Hamdok. “It is a source of concern in a moment when Sudan needs a political solution for that war that devastated the country for more than a year” the press person for the European External Actions Service said, reacting upon the move of the Sudanese prosecutors.

“We would like to use this opportunity to reiterate our good relationship, and support to the former Prime Minister Hamdok, who played a major role in leading Sudan democratic and economic reforms in the period from 2019 to 2020” the spokesperson for the European diplomacy underlined.

This week Sudan’s prosecution accused ex-Prime minister Abdallah Hamdok of “inciting war against the state” and other charges that could carry the death penalty, according media reports.
The prosecutor’s office is associated with the military chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, whose regular armed forces have been at war since April 2023 with paramilitary leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, his former ally.

Fifteen other people, including journalists and prominent politicians who, like Hamdok, live in exile, face similar grave charges of “violating the Constitution”.
The Attorney General’s decision was based on a complaint filed by the National Committee for War Crimes and Violations by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) which lodged a case in a court in Port Sudan under articles related to waging war against the state, incitement, collaboration, and undermining the constitutional system.

Hamdok, Sudan’s most prominent civilian politician, was the country’s first Premier in a fragile transition following a popular uprising after decades under Omar al-Bashir’s authoritarian rule.

These actions of the prosecutors occurred with the obvious intention to block the resumption of the Jeddah negotiations scheduled to resume on 28 April, as proposed by the American envoy to Sudan Tom Perriello, who ensured that he witnessed increased political will in the region to assist the efforts to bring the armed conflict to an end. Unfortunately so far on the grounds the situation remains fragmented, and the actions of different factions haphazard.
