SA: Trump grants asylum to farmers

Brussels 12.05.2025 The white South Africans have been granted refugee status in the United States by the Trump administration. The group of 59 people arrived at Washington Dulles airport in Virginia on Monday, May 12, according to a State Department official said. (Image above: illustration)

Trump said during a news conference at the White House that he’s allowing white farmers from South Africa to come to the United States as refugees because of the “genocide that’s taking place.” He claimed that in a post-apartheid South Africa, white farmers are “being killed” and he plans to address the issue with South African leadership next week.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christoper Landau and Department of Homeland Security Deputy Secretary Troy Edgar welcomed the group at the airport in person.

Landau told the new arrivals that “we respect what you had to deal with these last few years.” He noted that many of them are farmers, and said they would hopefully “bloom” in the U.S.

The Trump administration has decided to expedite the processing of Afrikaners as refugees for the systematic discrimination they are suffering in the South Africa.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa disagreed with the decision, underlining that those going to the U.S. “do not fit the definition of a refugee.”

Ramaphosa said that he informed Trump that what the U.S. President had been misinformed about the persecution of the White minority. This position has been repeated through years after the fall of the apartheid.
However the White farmers present the substantial evidence of the discrimination.
