Brussels 31.07.2023 “The European Union associates itself with the firm condemnations expressed by the Heads of State of the sub-region against the unacceptable coup de force carried out in Niger” reads the statement of the EU top diplomat Josep Borrell, released on Monday at 7:40 AM (Brussels time).
“President Bazoum, democratically elected, remains the sole Head of State in Niger. Any authority other than his own cannot be recognized. He must regain, without delay and without condition, the freedom and fullness of his high office.
“The European Union supports all the measures adopted by ECOWAS in response to this coup and will support them quickly and resolutely.
“The European Union rejects any accusation of foreign interference. It is important that the will of the people of Niger, as expressed by the votes, be respected.
“We hold the putschists responsible for any attacks on civilians, diplomatic personnel or facilities”.
