Niger: EU support to President Bazoum amid coup d’etat

Brussels 27.07.2023 “The European Union is following with great concern the current events in Niamey following a mutiny by part of the presidential guard at the residence of President Mohamed Bazoum. At this time, the situation remains tense” reads the statement of the EU top diplomat Josep Borrell.

“We reaffirm our full support for President Bazoum and our conviction that Niger is an essential partner of the European Union in the Sahel, the destabilization of which would not serve the interests of anyone, either in the country or in the region and beyond. It is not only the ongoing efforts against terrorist movements, but also the political and civil upheaval at work in Niger, which would suffer greatly.

“The European Union fully associates itself with the statements of the African Union, the Commission and the Chairmanship-in-Office of ECOWAS in strongly condemning this attack on democratic institutions and this attempt to destabilize the country.

“The European Union stands ready to support its partners in the ongoing efforts to find a peaceful solution to this attempted coup”
