Ethiopia.: Pastoralists killed in Sitti

Eleven civilians, the majority of whom cattle farmers (agropastoralists), were killed by members of the Afar regional state special forces, Mustefa Omer, president of Somali regional state confirmed to Addis Standard. The incident occurred in Sitti zone, Somali region of Ethiopia,  in Madane Kebele,

Earlier several individuals with family ties in the area presumed that the civilians were killed by members of the Liyu Police, the information confirmed by local authorities.

Clashes between militia in Afar and Somali regional states have been recurring in recent months causing protest demonstrations from both sides.

Amnesty International has reiterated their demand to the government of Ethiopia to disband a police unit which is accused of carrying out human rights abuses in the Somali and Oromia regions of the country.

The Liyu police unit was established by the Somali regional government as a counter-terrorism force but has on several occasions been accused of complicity in an ethnic conflict between Oromos and Somalis.

EU top diplomat to visit Horn of Africa

Federica Mogherini will begin her visit to the Horn of Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where the African Union Summit is taking place and she will meet several heads of state or government in the margins.

In Ethiopia Mogherini is due to meet President Shale Work Zwede and Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed, among other members of the government, to discuss further strengthening the EU-Ethiopia partnership.

The the EU top diplomat will also visit  funded by the bloc projects supporting the International Organisation for Migration together with Director General Antonio Vitorino.

Continuing her visit in the Horn of Africa,  Mogherini will visit Kenya, where she is due to meet President Kenyatta and members of the government. In Kenya, she will also launch a cross border programme, meet with representatives from the UN Habitat and UNEP, youth and civil society groups as well as inaugurating the new EU Delegation offices in Nairobi.

She will conclude her visit by travelling to Djibouti to meet President Ismail Omar Guelleh and other members of government, as well as visiting Member States’ military bases operating the EU ATALANTA maritime security mission.

The EU in the Horn of Africathe EU is working actively to strengthen its partnership with the region which shares many common interests with the European Union, from tackling climate change to boosting investment, to better managing migration and creating opportunities for youth.

The EU is a key partner for the region in many areas, in particular security with the three Common Security and Defence Policy missions: EUNAVFOR Atalanta maritime mission which fights piracy off the Somali coast, EUTM Somalia and EUCAP Somalia. The EU is also a key supporter of Intergovernmental Authority on Development, the regional body in the Horn of Africa.

Ethiopia mass grave investigated

A mass grave with  200 bodies is under Ethiopia police examination, investigating the burial discovered at the border between the Oromia (Oromiya) and Somali regions, state-media said.

The place of  massacre was found during an investigation of a former administrator of the Somali region Abdi Mohammed awaiting a trial over allegations of provoking ethnic clashes, and subsequently facing trial on charges of human rights abuses and stoking clashes, according to the reports of the Fana Broadcasting Corporation reported quoting police officials.

Police has not made public any further details.

Outbreak of violence in Jijiga

Ethiopian soldiers exchanged fire with members of local government security forces on in the country’s eastern Somali region after central authorities sought to arrest regional officials, via social media witnesses report scenes of violence.

Soldiers were deployed in the province’s capital Jijiga leading to a conflict with the region’s paramilitary forces.

Ethiopia’s Somali region has been plagued by violence for the last two decades. The government has fought the rebel Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) since 1984 after the group claimed secession of the region, also known under name of Ogaden.
